The alert is critical. The fix is known. And the ticket sits in a queue for days. Security teams understand the risk, but the people who keep applications available need proof that the change won’t break anything.
Their concerns are practical. An IPS protection could block legitimate traffic. A configuration change could interrupt a service. An endpoint policy could affect an application the business depends on. Without evidence, the recommendation waits.
Safe remediation answers that hesitation with evidence. It tests the proposed action against your environment, applies the approved change, and confirms the result. Security and operations teams decide together, with facts.
Many organizations already own protection they don’t enforce. Signatures sit inactive or in Detect mode while teams weigh false positives, inspection capacity, and business continuity. Meanwhile, applications and traffic patterns change, exceptions pile up, and policies drift away from how the environment runs today.
In the Safe Remediation white paper, 47% of the organizations measured had less than 50% protection enablement. Much of the capability they need is already in their environments.
Turning everything on isn’t the answer. Every activation carries risk. Teams need to know which changes matter for a given exposure, and how each will behave in production today.
Figure 1. Operational pressures and configuration drift can delay enforcement.
Safe remediation follows four stages: Observe, Prove, Act, and Confirm. Evidence carries the proposed response through each stage, with review and approval where required.
Observation starts with data your security and IT systems already produce. Vulnerability findings, IPS traffic, device utilization, endpoint policies, and configuration states show what surrounds the proposed change.
Then comes proof, and the method fits the technology. An IPS protection can inspect production traffic in Detect mode, giving teams evidence about false positives and performance before it progresses to Prevent. Operating system hardening can use a selected test group, with each host rechecked after execution. Endpoint settings can be assessed against the vendor's hardening baseline.
The decision becomes specific to your environment. Security teams explain the protection they expect. Infrastructure and application owners judge the effect on the systems they run.
Figure 2. Validation connects environmental evidence with approval, execution, and confirmation.
Use Existing Controls While Waiting For a Permanent Fix
Patching remains essential for addressing the underlying vulnerability. Testing, coordination, and deployment schedules can extend the time before a patch reaches production, creating a period when additional protection may be needed.
An existing IPS signature or virtual patch can help block the relevant exploit path during that period. Correlating vulnerability data with control coverage shows whether a suitable protection exists and whether it is inactive, in Detect mode, or already enforced.
That context helps teams select the response. A protection awaiting enforcement may be a candidate for validation and activation. An exposure without a compensating control may require urgent patching or another action.
The remediation record should distinguish interim protection from a permanent fix. A compensating control can reduce immediate exposure while the underlying vulnerability remains open and requires follow through.
Once an action has been evaluated, organizations can require approval of its scope or permit automated execution through configured workflows. The approved change then runs through the system responsible for the affected control.
IPS changes can use the security management server, operating system hardening can use existing patch management infrastructure, and supported endpoint changes can use the vendor API. This approach lets teams work through the technologies already deployed.
Confirmation completes the process. Policy installation can establish that an IPS protection reached enforcement. Host checks can verify a hardening change. Execution records can show failed or pending actions that still need attention, alongside the user, timestamp, and associated exposure.
Success should include evidence that the intended protection is active after execution. Subsequent security events can show whether a newly enabled control blocked activity associated with the exposure.
Across the measured organizations, remediation actions recorded a 99.5% success rate. Over one month, protections applied through remediation subsequently blocked 703.56 million attacks, including 21 million within 24 hours of remediation. These results describe the analyzed environments and provide evidence of protection following enforcement.

Make Safe Remediation Part of Exposure Management
Prioritization establishes where action should begin. Safe remediation gives teams a controlled path for carrying that decision into production, with evidence supporting the proposed change and confirmation showing its result.
Check Point Exposure Management connects exposure prioritization with environmental validation, controlled execution, and confirmation through existing security technologies. Security teams can use that process to reduce exposure while evaluating the operational impact of each response.
